[:ja]ドイツにあるアーヘンという町をご存知でしょうか？
アーヘンはドイツの西端にあって、オランダ・ベルギーの国境と面している町です。
実はローマ帝国の時代から、栄えていて、もともとは温泉の保養場所として発展してきました。
当時のアーヘンの呼び名はアクアエ・グランニというラテン語で意味は、水・鉱泉という意味だそうです。
アーヘンという名前も、もとは古代ドイツの言葉aha、水という意味から来ているとのこと。
アーヘンの町はどんなところ？
アーヘンは、ローマ時代から栄えていることは上に書きましたが、中世に入って８世紀にはフランク王国のカール大帝が宮殿を置いたので、フランク王国の首都のようになり、ルネサンスの舞台の１つになりました。アーヘン大聖堂では、歴代のローマ王３０人が戴冠式を行っています。
アーヘンの見どころ「アーヘン大聖堂」
アーヘンの見どころは何と言ってもアーヘン大聖堂でしょう。アーヘン大聖堂は、１９７８年にユネスコの世界遺産となっています。
アーヘン大聖堂は皇帝の大聖堂とも言われており、カール大帝が埋葬されています。この大聖堂はヨーロッパの北部地域では最古のもので、西暦７８６年にカール大帝が宮殿教会として建設しました。建設当時は北部地域最大のドーム建築だったそうです。ドーム部分は八角形に形作られているのが特徴となっています。
巡礼者の数が急激に増えたことから、聖歌隊のためのホールが増築され、縦に長いステンドグラスがたくさん設けられていることから「ガラスの家」と呼ばれています。
大聖堂の外にいるキメラ？
アーヘン大聖堂のガラスの家部分の外側をじっくり見てみると、変わった像があることに気づきます。
まるでドラゴンクエストに出てくるキメラのようです。
