世界史が好きな方や世界史を学んでいた方は、マーストリヒト条約という言葉に聞き覚えがあるかもしれません。
マーストリヒト条約は、欧州連合（EU）の創設を定めた条約で、正式には欧州連合条約という名前なのですが、調印された場所がオランダのマーストリヒトであったことから、そのように呼ばれています。
そう、マーストリヒトは町の名前だったのです。
マーストリヒトはどんな町？
マーストリヒトはオランダの南の方に位置していて、アムステルダムから南に250kmほど下ったところにあり、マース川を挟んで東西に広がっている町です。西側が旧市街、東側が新市街となっています。
マーストリヒトはドイツとベルギーとの国境に近く、昔から交通の要所として争いの絶えない場所でした。
そのため、13世紀頃には二重の城壁が構築されていて、今でもその一部が残っています。

マーストリヒトのおすすめスポット「地獄の門Helpoort」
まず1つ目は、地獄の門と呼ばれる門。Helpoort。
この門は、1229年に作られた城門です。なぜ地獄の門と呼ばれているかと言うと、
中世の頃にヨーロッパで流行ったペストに関係していて、ペストにかかってしまった人を町の外にあるペスト患者専門の建物へ移動させるときにこの門を使って外に出したことから、そのように呼ばれるようになったそうです。町の人からすれば、その門を出ていったペスト患者はもう町には戻って来なかった。ということなのでしょうね。
マーストリヒトのおすすめスポット「元教会の本屋さん」
2つ目に紹介するのは本屋さん。
本屋さん自体は普通の本屋なのですが、建物が実はもともと教会だったので、天井が高くて天井画も少し残っている本屋です。
外観は教会そのもの。中も本棚以外は教会そのものといった感じです。
実はこの本屋さん、なんと2008年に世界で一番美しい本屋として選ばれました。教会自体は700年以上前のものだそうです。
中にはカフェコーナーもありますので、観光途中の休憩に歴史を感じながら、コーヒー飲みつつ、本を読むのはいかがでしょうか。

The first one is called the Gates of Hell, or Helpoort.
This gate is a castle gate that was built in 1229. Why is it called the Gate of Hell?
The reason why it is called the Gate of Hell is because it is related to the plague ”Pest” that spread in Europe during the Middle Ages, and people who had contracted the plague used this gate to move them out of the town to a building specializing in plague patients. From the townspeople’s point of view, plague patients who left through the gate never came back to the town. I guess that’s what it means.

The second place I would like to introduce is a bookstore.
The bookstore itself is an ordinary bookstore, but the building was actually originally a church, so it is a bookstore with a high ceiling and a few ceiling paintings.
The exterior is a church itself. The inside is also like a church itself except for the bookshelves.
In fact, this bookstore was voted the most beautiful bookstore in the world in 2008. The church itself is said to be over 700 years old.
